Crucified River is a collection of poems written over a 6-year period. the murder of over 500 women in Cd. Juárez and the deaths of thousands of men, women, and children who have died crossing the US-Mexico border affect us all. For me, writing has been a form of protest and healing.

Gracias a la Sra. Raquel Duran (En paz descanse) y a la Dra. Irasema Coronado por su contribución a Rio Crucificado.

Thank you, Maria Miranda Maloney of Mouthfeel Press for creating opportunities for new and established poets!

Ode to Segundo Barrio

Ancestral land

the corner store,

campesinos sleeping on hard floors,

empty presidios filled with memories…

families that moved on—or were pushed out

Beyond repair

political divisions tumble,

destroy, obliterate the evidence…

repression gains recognition,

accumulates wealth

Bloody hands toil the land

increase profit margins…

bloody perfumed hands

mismanage, undermine,

recreate lies to wash young minds,

murder the victims, bury the truth

in gashes of poisoned territory

Colonization replayed,

torrents of acid rain, sunlight petrified,

steel walls electrified,

death gone wild,

human carcasses on display,

patriotic stances salute the failed state

al árbol que me dio vida.

No me dolió el esfuerzo—

surgió de un profundo suspiro.…

Para Raquel Durán

Dear Friend

Shadows mourn

the loss of evening light…

always blue

like the moon on winter nights

Crisp, cold air fills my nostrils

I weep without regret—

a friend is ready to cross over…

just like the others

Smiling faces adorn

the altar of my life—

familiar faces on photographs,

deep glances that reflect

pure fire burning

eternal candles

Soft white flowers

caress the breeze…

the scent of… Continue
